World Water Day is an annual observance day initiated by the United Nations that is held on March 22 to highlight the importance of fresh water. This is an opportunity for us to reflect and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources, and this can be done not only at the federal, provincial, and municipal level, but at the individual and corporate level as well.
This year’s World Water Day theme is, Water for Peace, which ignites discussions about the potential for tensions to arise between communities and countries when water is polluted, scarce, or when there is unequal access to clean water.
Partners in Project Green is strengthening relationships, not only within the community, but with the water that flows through it. Check out some of our water programs and see how you can address water pollution.
Fellow PPG Member, EnviroPod is offering the PPG community an exclusive discount on LittaTrap Catch Basin Inserts! These devices are designed to fit in sewer drains to efficiently capture plastic and litter from stormwater runoff.
Corporate Flood and Heat Risk Management Resource Hub
This free resource hub supports the Industrial, Commercial, Institutional, and Multi-Unit Residential Buildings sectors to understand and foster uptake of stormwater management, flood resilience and heat risk management best practices.
Watch a special World Water Day module, “Understanding Our Connection to Water: An Anishinaabe Woman’s Perspective”, which shares an Anishinaabe woman’s perspective on the significance that Water holds, not only for her as an Anishinaabe woman, but to all of us as neighbours of this land.
Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy
The Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy (Floatables Strategy) is a collaborative strategy with a mission to reduce plastic pollution and other floating litter in the harbour. From Spring to Fall, you may catch sight of a series of trash trapping devices along the harbourfront. Events are hosted throughout the year to engage the public in what we’re finding in our waterways. Check out the types of events that will be coming up this summer!
Sustainable Salt Management Resource Hub
Did you know that 7 million tonnes of road salt are applied to Canadian roads every winter? Experts at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority estimate that more than 10 times the appropriate amount of salt is being applied to parking lots and walkways, which is negatively impacting nearby waterways, lakes, groundwater, and soil. Find out how you can reduce road salt use on your property.
Municipal Water Efficiency programs
Rising water costs and ageing municipal infrastructure present challenges for businesses. Water efficiency upgrades can help your organization reduce its process and wastewater footprint to maximize environmental benefits and minimize costs incurred. The Region of Peel, York and Toronto all have water efficiency programs to support businesses in conducting water audits and retrofits.
Partners in Project Green are always seeking to provide content and resources to foster water stewardship and collaboration. Do your part to address water pollution and equal access to water. See how you can benefit from our programs. Contact Chaya Chengappa, Program Manager at chaya.chengappa@trca.ca for details.
